  • Spray late afternoon or early evening when pollinators are not active and temperatures are cooler—this reduces phytotoxicity and avoids harming beneficials.
  • Focus on undersides of leaves—whiteflies prefer the lower surface, and neem works best where residues contact eggs and nymphs.
  • Rotate neem with other compatible options if needed. While neem has multiple modes of action, alternating with a different soft product (such as insecticidal soap) can help when pressure is extreme—always test a few leaves first.
  • Keep the greenhouse cleaner: remove weeds and alternate host plants (eg. nasturtiums, certain solanaceous volunteers) that can act as whitefly reservoirs.
  • Safety and compatibility

    Neem is generally safe for people, pets and many beneficial insects when used as directed, but it can still irritate skin and eyes. I always wear gloves and a mask during mixing and avoid spraying when beneficials are active. Avoid combining neem in the tank with strong alkaline cleaners or copper-based products—read product labels for compatibility. If you use commercial biological controls (parasitic wasps like Encarsia), coordinate applications: some neem products are compatible at lower concentrations, but check compatibility charts or ask the supplier.

    Troubleshooting common problems

    If you follow the schedule and still see heavy infestations, check these common issues:

  • Poor coverage: If leaves stay dry underneath, whiteflies are protected. Improve spray technique or add a spreader-sticker approved for use with neem.
  • Sticky cards not placed well: Cards hung too high or too far from plants won’t reflect true pressure. Move cards to the canopy and near vents.
  • Reinfestation from outside: Check greenhouse vents, doors and nearby plants. Whitefly populations on neighboring weeds or crops can reinvade quickly—remove these sources.

  • When to accept partial control and move on

    In a greenhouse setting, the goal is suppression rather than total eradication. A few whiteflies during high season is normal. I aim to keep numbers low enough that plants remain vigorous and yields aren’t affected. If catches on sticky cards fall to a steady low level for two weeks, I switch to weekly monitoring and only spray if counts spike.
